Griffin & Howe No. 1320 Winchester Model 54 .257 Roberts Pre-War Custom Rifle
Description:
Griffin & Howe custom sporting rifle, No. 1320, built on a Winchester Model 54 action and chambered in .257 Roberts, the barrel marked “25 ROBERTS.” Features a 22 1/2" barrel engraved “No. 1320 GRIFFIN & HOWE, INC. NEW YORK” and fitted with a classic hooded ramp front sight. The rifle retains a Lyman receiver sight and is stocked in finely figured walnut with traditional Griffin & Howe styling including point-pattern checkering at the pistol grip and forend, right-hand cheekpiece, ebony forend tip, and steel grip cap. Length of pull measures 13 1/2" over a 1" recoil pad. Rifle was originally equipped for scope use and retains professionally installed filler screws in the factory-drilled and tapped scope mounting holes.
An excellent example of a prewar Griffin & Howe custom sporting rifle from the golden age of American bespoke gunmaking. Built in 1934 during the era when Griffin & Howe was producing high-grade sporting rifles for the Abercrombie & Fitch trade, this rifle reflects the classic American custom sporting style of the late 1920s through 1930s.
Condition is very fine overall. Bore is excellent and the action remains excellent mechanically. Barrel retains approximately 60-70% original blue with portions beginning to develop an attractive brown patina consistent with honest age and use. Walnut stock remains exceptionally well preserved with no noticeable handling marks. Checkering remains sharp and well defined.
A highly collectible and increasingly scarce early Griffin & Howe custom sporter built on the desirable Winchester Model 54 action in one of the classic period chamberings.
