Description:
#2488, Griffin & Howe, New York, N. Y. .338 Winchester Magnum Pre-64 Model 70 G&H Sporter made 1963 with a 24" barrel.
This is an example of the epitome of Griffin & Howe’s custom rifle work with all their features starting with a Pre-64 Model 70 improved Mauser action with its renowned 3-position safety, then adding their world-famous custom lineaments: a 24” round tapered barrel with a matted 1/4 rib with 3 folding sights, a banded front sight ramp with a removable protector, and a banded front sling swivel. As a must for a G&H big-game rifle, they fitted their proprietary G&H side mount with blind screws (even inside the rail), using the correct ring height for this Austrian-made Swarovski Optik Habicht 3-9x36 scope. G&H did not miss a trick with their custom metal work which includes: rounded rear tang (with parallel checkering border), bolt knob with five-panel teardrop engraving, a checkered trigger face, jeweled action bolt, jeweled extractor and jeweled magazine follower. All bluing is rust blued and is the finest example of G&H craftsmanship.
The stock is classic G&H with about as fancy figure as can be for this powerful cartridge (maintaining that balance between aesthetics and strength of wood), fitted with an Ebony forend tip, executed with wrap around point pattern hand-checkering and a shadowline cheekpiece which starts at the comb (a G&H hallmark). This is a rare and hard-to-find beautiful piece of English walnut with great color and contrast with the figure planned in the right locations. Stock accessories include a steel grip cap, rear sling eye, inlaid gold monogram oval, and 1” Decelerator pad over a 13 1/2" LOP. Weight is 8 lbs. & 8 lbs. 13 oz. with the scope. Wood to metal fit at both the upper and lower tangs are G&H perfect.
Condition: The original blue is 99%, the original stock finish at 98%, the checkering is 99%, and the bore is as new. It appears that it has not been shot since it left New York City as there is absolutely no indication of such.
This is a premier Sporting Rifle with the professional touch of Griffin & Howe; and set up with what has been and still is, a best workable scope system for today. This is a perfect example, now becoming quite rare, of a modern G&H rifle made in the heyday of the best of G&H in the modern era when Abercrombie & Fitch owned the company..

*The Roger Rule Collection of Custom Rifles was assembled in the early ‘80s after I completed my pre-eminent Winchester pre-64 Model 70 collection of original rifles. For this auxiliary collection, I have chosen custom rifles that were built only with renowned Winchester pre-64 Model 70 actions and made only by best makers… Griffin & Howe would certainly classify as one of them.
