HARPERS FERRY MODEL 1816 MUSKET TYPE III - 1836 FLINTLOCK w/ MINIE BALL
Description:
On consignment we have a Harpers Ferry Model 1816 Musket. This is a Type III flintlock musket with a US marked, 1836 dated lock. The gun shows extensive use, and the barrel has been cut down to 19". The side plate is missing and shows some stock repairs. The buttplate is US marked, although no visible cartouches remain on the stock. The barrel shows the V, P, and left facing eagle's head standard on Harpers Ferry guns of the era. Barrel date and serial number are illegible. The most fascinating aspect of this piece, which has clearly seen a lot of hard use, is a Civil War era Minie Ball embedded in the left side of the stock.
Many of the 1816 rifles were converted to percussion, but this one retains the original flint priming mechanism, missing the upper jaw and with the cock screw broken. The 1816 muskets saw use in several prominent conflicts, including the Civil War. When percussion caps were in short supply, the flintlock guns were preferred.
