Harpers Ferry
Model:1855
58 Caliber
Description: Model 1855 Harper Ferry Rifle 1861 date. A difficult to find model 1855 2 band 58 caliber rifle with Maynard tape primer system lock. Both the lockplate and barrel are dated 1861.The rifle has all iron fittings and the patch box has the spare nipple. This could be one of the 420 rifles completed in 1861, before the capture of the Harpers Ferry arsenal by the Confederate forces. The bore is fair with rifling still present and barrel markings are clear. The original rifle sights with "R" stampings are present as is the ramrod. The stock shows use but has no major damage. There is no evidence of an inspection cartouche and the buttstock shows possible charring. The US musket buttplate is most likley a replacement as the rifle buttplate has no US markings. Other markings include "D", "13" on the lower barrel band and are possibly company and regimential marks. There is a "X" carved into the stock which is a known Confederate marking and may indicate Confederate usage. A fine 1855 Harpers Ferry Rifel and a historic firearm from the Civil War. We have several Black Powder guns available if interested please contact us for futher information.
