This masterpiece of gunmaking has 26” fluid steel chopper lump extractor barrels with a concealed third bite, a fold-over twilight bead ivory front sight, a raised flat matted quarter rib and Express sight with a forward standing sight and 2 folding rear leaves regulated for 100, 200 and 300 yards, and so marked.
When Theodore Roosevelt asked his guide about ejectors versus extractors, R.J. Cunningham replied, “Extractors never fail!” …an important feature for a dangerous-game gun – possibly a life-saving feature. The Victorians wanted ejectors for their driven bird hunts, but extractors for their heavy game guns, and often even hammers were preferred for dangerous game.
A Best Gun: This rifle has all the finishing touches that make a “best rifle” -- gold-line cocking indicators, concealed third fastener, bushed firing pins with retaining screws, manual top tang safety, SAFE inlaid in gold, double triggers with the front articulated and textured, extended upper tang over the comb, extended lower tang to the grip cap, and case-hardened coin finish. The maker purposely textured the front trigger and left the rear plain to help the shooter recognize which barrel he is about to fire. With magnificent Holland & Holland ornamental scroll engraving with roses in the H&H Royal style fully covering the coin-finished receiver, the final product is a true work of art.
London proof at 75 Cordite with 480 grain bullet.
Wood: Fully figured deluxe quality English walnut stocks with swing lever lock forend release that is strong and very practical, copied by FAMARs Webley African 470, classic point pattern checkering, teardrops, engraved steel trapdoor pistol grip cap for a spare front sight, beaded pancake cheekpiece, vacant gold oval for owners initials, rear sling swivel and leather covered recoil pad -- making this rifle as comfortable to shoot as it is to admire.
Although built at the height of Holland’s gun making (to over shadow all competition) it still has all modern dimensions at 14 5/8” LOP over a 3/4” leather covered pad, drop is 1 ½” and 2 ¼” , cast off is ½”… perfect for today’s shooters. Weight: 10 lb. 15 Oz.
In the book, Gamefield Classics, by MacIntosh and Hedrick, the authors have a chapter entitled: “Objects of My Desire” and opposite the written page is a full page photo of a Holland & Holland Royal Express 500/465 NE, pages 120-121 (same style and engraving).
Inscriptions: ( right barrel) WINNERS OF ALL THE FIELD TRIALS, LONDON
(left barrel) HOLLAND & HOLLAND, 98 NEW BOND STREET, LONDON
Condition: Excellent Condition, tight with excellent bores… overall condition is excellent with 98% blacking, 98% coin finish. Wood is nice and tight on the action and forend iron. The finish and the checkering will still grade at 99%. The bores are like new. Extractors and locks are strong. Trigger pulls are exactly what you would expect from a Royal, braking cleanly at 4 ¼# and 4 ½#. Bolting is as tight today as the day it left 98 New Bond Street.
This gun is #2 of a pair that were originally cased separately, note the brass label, “Holland & Holland 465 EX” above a “2” indicating which gun. These heavy pairs were rarely cased together unless in motor cases. The label is the maker’s with the correct time period and address. Included also are 500-465 nickel snap caps.
A Rare Find: This is a rare find for any gun enthusiast or safari hunter, boasting exceptional features that make it an unparalleled addition to any collection at this price.
Sale: Compare prices of other H&H 500/465’s which run anywhere from $85,000 (pre-owned) to $220,000 (new). Liquidating my collection, I have priced it here to sell at $49,750.00!
