Hopkins and Allen Single Shot Falling Block Shotgun
Description:
Hopkins and Allen single shot falling block 12 gauge shotgun with a 20" round barrel, external spur hammer, and walnut stocks. The buttplate is hard black plastic. The shotgun features a simple brass bead front sight; rear is a groove machined into the top of the receiver. Receiver is a tall, rectangular steel block with the falling-block mortise clearly visible when open. There is no automatic ejector, it is manual extraction. This shotgun includes a takedown screw under the barrel ahead of the receiver for disassembly. The barrel is marked Hopkins & Allen Arms co. Norwich, Conn. U.S.A. (post 1899 barrel marking.) Removing the barrel reveals the serial number 2446.
The condition is good overall. The shoptgun is mechanically functioning. The metal surfaces have aquired an even patina. The bore is free of rust or pitting. The stocks show wear consistent with age including dings, nicks, and dents. A small crack is visible near the grip.
The shotgun has been decorated with various brass tacks, along with a silver inlay and decal with Old English text in black on the stocks. The tang screw includes a beaded leather drop (possibly Native.) The receiver is laser engraved with the words Dept. of Int. in old English text outlined in a decorative box. It is unknown when the decorations were added but they may indicate its use by the Bureau of Indian Affairs which fell under the Department of the Interior during this time.
