The W.J. Jeffery & Co. Sidelever Rook Rifle is a superb example of the elegant small-game rifles produced during the golden age of British sporting arms. Built by one of London's most respected gunmakers, this rifle embodies the refinement, craftsmanship, and practical utility that made rook rifles a staple of Edwardian sporting life. Lightweight, beautifully balanced, and housed in its original case, it represents a highly desirable surviving example from an increasingly scarce category of British sporting rifle.
Manufactured between 1900 and 1902, this rifle is chambered for the classic .297/.230 Long Rook Rifle cartridge, one of the most popular and accurate small-game cartridges of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Built as a single-shot sidelever hammer rifle, it features a crisp single trigger and robust action design that remains mechanically sound more than a century after its construction.
The rifle weighs just 5 pounds 4.2 ounces and is fitted with a 26.125-inch octagonal barrel, giving it the light handling and excellent balance that made rook rifles so effective on rabbits, rooks, vermin, and target shooting. The barrel displays attractive period detailing, with matted sections extending from the breech to the rear sight and again near the muzzle, while the central section carries the maker's address:
"W.J. Jeffery & Co. 13 King Street, St. James's London S.W."
The sighting arrangement is particularly impressive. A standing express rear sight with silver center line is accompanied by two folding leaf sights for extended ranges, while a bead front sight completes the package. Also included in the case is a detachable flip-up peep sight that mounts to the top of the pistol grip, providing a more precise sighting option for target shooting or small-game work.
This rifle remains in very good overall condition, showing honest wear consistent with careful use over its lifetime. The bore is mostly clear with light age-related spotting and retains strong rifling. The action remains smooth and locks up tightly, the trigger is crisp, and the hammer remains strong and positive in operation.  The ejector is strong and in-time.
The case-colored action is tastefully adorned with light border and scroll engraving, while the maker's name appears within engraved banners on both sides. The surviving traces of original case color contribute greatly to the rifle's visual appeal and authenticity.
The rifle is stocked in beautifully figured deluxe walnut featuring a semi-pistol grip and matching splinter forend. Strong checkering remains present throughout the grip and forend. Additional deluxe features include a case-hardened steel pistol grip cap and a blank initial oval inlet into the belly of the stock.
The rifle is accompanied by its period canvas case, complete with the maker's trade label. Also included are a pull-through cleaning brush and the original peep sight with mounting hardware. The rifle currently retains the filler screws in the stock where the peep sight may be installed.
Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the overall condition.
Elegant, lightweight, and exceptionally well made, this W.J. Jeffery rook rifle represents the type of refined sporting arm that helped establish Jeffery's reputation among Britain's premier gunmakers. Complete with its accessories and original case, it offers collectors and enthusiasts a rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully preserved London rook rifle from the height of the British sporting era.
