Extra Fine Prewar WJ Jeffery .333 Magnum Square Bridge Mauser Rifle with Interested Provenance
Description:
Up for sale is a classic Prewar WJ Jeffery in .333 Jeffery on a rare magnum square bridge action in excellent unaltered condition that is believed to have one been owned by famed Hollywood legend and Hemingway friend and hunting companion, Gary Cooper. It is quite rare and desirable to find these on the magnum actions. This rifle features a 24” barrel with sling eye on the barrel. It has ivory bead front sight and matted quarter rib containing three leaf express sights with platinum lines featuring one standing and two Jeffery reverse folding leaves marked 1, 2, ands 3 (100, 200, 300 yards) respectively. The barrel with marked with cordite proofs for 300 gr max bullet and 42 grains cordite and is engraved “WJ Jeffery & Co Ltd, 26 Bury Street St James London” and SN “28155”. The square bridge Mauser action features hand stippled front ring and rear bridge, jeweled bolt body, hinged floorplate. The Mauser SN is 81092 with numbers matching and the Jeffery SN is 28155 making it circa 1925 (see ledger page). The straight stock featured beautifully figured wood grain with buffalo horn forend tip and grip cap and rear sling eye with a trap door checkered steel buttplate.
The rifle weighs 8.5 lbs and has a LOP of 14-1/4” to the end of the steel buttplate.
The condition of the rifle is superb overall having likely been expertly cleaned up at some point in its past but not altered or over polished in any way. All markings are crisp. The wood is beautiful save for a few unfortunate “safe” marks and one gouge in the buttstock near the toe.
The stock also features a plastic label with GARY COOPER printed on it which was put there by a man who claimed that he bought this rifle from Gary Cooper’s estate and had a letter from Cooper’s attorney attesting the same. Unfortunately, when the man passed, the attorney letter was lost as the family cleaned out his things (according to his son). I have not been able to find conclusive information on the sale of Cooper’s estate that would show this rifle listed. Contact had been made with Gary Cooper’s daughter who was very gracious to answer questions but said they had no records with good descriptions and serial numbers of her father’s large gun collection. Thus, it is hard to firmly corroborate a Gary Cooper connection. Further research could potentially prove this out but, for now, it is a bit of hearsay. Regardless I left the original GARY COOPER label on it to be included with the rifle. Take this potential provenance for what it is worth.
The cost of actual shipping to your FFL will be added to the pruchase price. Please call or email with any questions or to purchase this rifle. Thank you for looking.
