Joslyn Model 1864 Saddle Ring Carbine
Description: This is a nice Joslyn Model 1864 saddle ring carbine produced for the US government during the Civil War. In total, 16,500 cavalry carbines were made under contract by Joslyn. The initial design from 1862 was met with mixed reviews and was improved upon in 1864. The model 1864's breech loading assembly was much more favorable and those carbines saw use by the Federal Calvary. The breech loading assemblies were impressive enough that 3,000 were purchased and used to make infantry rifles by the Springfield Arsenal, making them the first mass produced breech-loading rifles to be made by Springfield. This particular example is in nice condition overall. The right-side plate reads "Joslyn Firearms Co. Stonington Conn. 1864". The left-hand side of the barrel has a "F.D.L" inspector mark toward the breech. There is noticeable finish loss around the breech and on the locks. Brown patina and spotty oxidation throughout. There is no major damage to the wood, but there are noticeable scuffs and scratches throughout. The bore has strong rifling with pin-pricking throughout.
