"Kentucky Long Rifle By Frederick Sell From The Norm Flayderman Collection (57593)
Description: "Made circa 1810-1820. 46 caliber with a 39.5" barrel. This is a Kentucky Rifle out of the famous Norm Flayderman collection attributed to master gunsmith Frederick Sell. There are a lot of variances in the Frederick Sell Rifles. Both his father and brother were also makers of fine Kentucky Rifles. According to Joe Kindig, author of Thoughts On The Kentucky Rifle in its Golden Age “ This is one of the most important families – if not the most important family – of Kentucky Rifle Makers" The patch box of this gun is almost identical to the one pictured on page 420 of Kindig’s book. The relief stock carving is reminiscent of several rifles in Kindig’s book as well with different elements from different rifles show up in this one. Some masters like John Armstrong made almost the same design over and over again, while Frederick Sell made a new gun each time. The barrel of this gun has a dark gray to brown patina throughout. The wood has been cleaned and there are minor repairs as well as a major repair 17.5" from the muzzle. This could be a completely ne spliced piece of wood, or just a repair. No disassembly was done to verify. This gun also has a brass lock that has been reconverted back to Flintlock. While some restoration has been done, this is an original gun by one of the finest makers. This gun was in Mr. Flayderman’s collection when he died. Mr. Flayderman had more than one Frederick Sell in his collection at the time of his death, so he possibly could have been collecting them. This gun also possibly could have come out of the Kindig collection as Mr. Flayderman did a lot of business with Mr. Kindig. Regardless, this is an extraordinary rifle from a maker whose guns rarely come up for sale! Antique: Yes Price: $45,000.00 Contact Seller |
