Here we present an antique Palemon Powell Half Stock Percussion Rifle made circa the mid-1800s in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Powell gunmaking family were well-known Cincinnati gunmakers from the 1830s all the way until after the turn of the 20th century. The company went through several variations of the P. Powell name over the decades. The census of 1850 indicates that Palemon Powell employed 5 hands and produced 150 rifles that year. Cincinnati lies on the Ohio River, an extremely important feature that allowed passage for exploration, travel, and trade from the Eastern United States to the Western Frontier in the 18th and early-19th Centuries.

This example’s octagonal barrel is in .32 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many of the maker’s names of these percussion rifles have been lost over time.

The overall condition is good. This example has been refinished. The stock is solid with a thin, stable crack forward of the lock plate. The action is strong. The bore is dark with serviceable rifling. “P. Powell” barrel mark is legible.
