Keller Half-Stock Long Rifle made circa the mid-1800s in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Possible John or Jacob Keller both active around this time in Carlisle. This example’s octagonal barrel is in .40 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Double set triggers. Large brass patchbox. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. The overall condition is fair. Dark patina. Movement in the stock where the repair is; located about the lock. The lock plate is separated where the rear bolt fastens.
