Kentucky Style Long Rifle with H.E. Dimick & Co. Lock!

Here we present an antique A.J. Jones Long Rifle with a Horace E. Dimick of St. Louis Marked Lock, made circa the mid-19th Century. “H.E. DIMICK & Co./ST. LOUIS” is engraved on the lock. Horace E. Dimick was located in Saint Louis, Missouri. This was the “Gateway to the West” as St. Louis was once the last stop before getting into true Frontier wilderness with little habitation West of the Mississippi. Trappers, traders, hunters and adventurers would travel over land from the East or up the river from the South in order to supply themselves for journeys West. Likewise, those rugged men and women living apart from civilized society would travel back to St. Louis periodically to resupply, sell their products, and let off some steam. Dimick built many plains style rifles using English bar style locks. Dimick’s process was unique in that he would leave out the “drip bar”. The drip bar was usually soldered against the barrel to eliminate the wood around the nipple so charring would be reduced. This example indeed has omitted the drip bar, with the stock remaining in outstanding condition!

“A.J. JONES” is inscribed atop the barrel with stars on either side—Jones was out of Augusta, Kentucky which is right on the Ohio River, southeast of Cincinnati. He is a seldom seen maker. This spot was customarily reserved for the overall maker of the rifle. This rifle balances very nicely and features a 38-inch octagonal barrel that measures about .465” from land to land. Crisp double set triggers (the front trigger is of thin, straight profile with an unusual spur on the back). Open type rifle sights. The stock is full-length and made of maple with a very nice striped pattern. There is a crescent of German silver set into the cheek rest on the left side of the butt stock. Butt plate, trigger guard, side plate, ramrod tubes, and fore end cap are of brass.

The overall condition is fine. Smooth brown finish. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The maple stock is solid with nice striped grain. This example comes with a nice fringed leather scabbard that is in very good shape—newer, but a great accessory. This is a truly fabulous plains rifle that has a connection to St. Louis—the Gateway to the West! It is truly astounding the condition in which it remains. A rare find!
