Antique J. FORDNEY American Half-Stock .31 Percussion LANCASTER Long Rifle
Pennsylvania Style HUNTING/HOMESTEAD Long Rifle
Description: Antique J. FORDNEY American Half-Stock .31 Percussion LANCASTER Long Rifle Pennsylvania Style HUNTING/HOMESTEAD Long Rifle Here we present an antique J. Fordney Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Jacob Fordney was gunsmith whose shop had been located at corner of Orange and Prince Streets in Lancaster and was part of the Fordney family of gunmakers based out of Lancaster. He was born in 1808, died at the age of 70. The family was of French, Huguenot, descent, from the Swiss-French border area. The name originally was Fortenieux, then Fortenee and finally became Fordney. He was listed in Lancaster Directory in 1857. On November 7, 1837, he contracted with the U.S. Government for 250 rifles for Indians at $13.00 each. This example has a stout octagonal barrel in .31 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many makers’ names of the so-called Kentucky long rifles have been lost over time. The overall condition is nearing fine. Strong action. Smooth and original brown barrel patina. The bore is semi-bright with strong rifling and has been sleeved at some point. This example sports a solid maple stock with less than average handling. Sharply checkered wrist. Lightly engraved lock. Markings are legible. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 36-3/8 inches. Caliber: .31 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1500 #254004 SOLD Antique: Yes |
