Description: Antique OHIO RIFLE WORKS Half-Stock .32 Cal. Percussion American LONG RIFLE HUNTING/HOMESTEAD Long Rifle Here we present an antique Ohio Rifle Works Half-Stock Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Bryan, Ohio. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .32 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Ohio Rifle Works was run by Samuel Folk. Per Mr. J.B. Whisker: Folk, Samuel (1863-1940). gunsmith. Bryan, Williams County. Samuel was born in Williams County on 22 April 1863, a son of William and Elizabeth Folk. On 26 July 1885 he married Orcelia Dale Dorshimer. 1880, son of, apprentice to, William Folk. Samuel died in Williams County on 20 February 1940. On 25 November 1884 William and Samuel Folk received patent number 308,482, for a breech-loading firearm with an internal hammer, a break-open action [Gardner; Census]. Folk, William (1833-1897). gunsmith. Bryan, Williams County. William married Catharine André. 1860, West Jefferson, Jefferson Twp., William Folk, gunsmith, 28, born in PA; Elizabeth, 20, born in OH, living with his parents, Isaac and Elizabeth Folk. 1880, William, gunsmith, 47, born in PA; Catharine, wife, 39; Samuel, 17, gunsmith; Minnie, 11, all born in OH. William and Samuel operated Folk’s Rifle Works and at least one extant gun is so marked. “William Folk accidentally shot himself with a pistol while shooting mark. He lived less than an hour after the fatal shot. He was one of Bryan’s oldest businessmen” [Cleveland Leader, 25 September 1897; Census; Ancestry]. The overall condition is fair. Original patina. The ramrod rib on the bottom of the barrel has been soldered. The action is not presently functional. The bore is dim with some visible rifling. The stock is solid, though there is a sliver at the top-rear of the lock. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 36 inches.
