Antique VERMONT Made NICANOR KENDALL .42 Cal. Percussion UNDERHAMMER Rifle
Windsor, Vermont PRISON INMATE Produced Rifle
Description: Antique VERMONT Made NICANOR KENDALL .42 Cal. Percussion UNDERHAMMER Rifle Windsor, Vermont PRISON INMATE Produced Rifle Here we present an antique Nicanor Kendall Underhammer Rifle, manufactured in Windsor, Vermont, circa the early to mid-1840s. Kendall was born in Windsor, Vermont in 1807 and served an apprenticeship under gunsmith Asa Story, and received a patent for his underhammer percussion lock, which was safer than a percussion cap located on top of the gun to protect the shooters face in the event of a backfire. In the mid to late 1840s, underhammer rifles became very popular in the United States for target shooting and hunting, though they would not become a part of the westward expansion. Around 1835 Kendall began to manufacture his underhammer rifles at the state prison in Windsor. Kendall produced his arms using unskilled prison labor for which he paid compensation to the state, and hired skilled workers to perform the technical work. One of Kendall’s first large orders came in 1836 from the people of Texas, who were seeking independence from Mexico. In 1843 Kendall entered into a partnership with Richard Smith Lawrence of New York. The two opened a custom rifle shop in Windsor where they manufactured both underhammer and side-hammer percussion rifles and shotguns. The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. Solid stock with no more than average wear. This example has seen a repair to the front barrel band, of which remains stable. Legible markings. “N. KENDALL/WINSOR VT/PATENT” marked atop the barrel. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 20-1/2 inches. Caliber: .42 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1450 #220325 SOLD Antique: Yes |
