Antique W.L. HUDSON Back Action CINCINNATI .50 Percussion HOMESTEAD Rifle
Mid-1800s GAME GETTING Rifle WELSH GUNMAKER
Description: Antique W.L. HUDSON Back Action CINCINNATI .50 Percussion HOMESTEAD Rifle Mid-1800s GAME GETTING Rifle WELSH GUNMAKER Here we present an antique W.L. Hudson Back Action Percussion Rifle made circa the mid-1800s in Cincinnati, Ohio. William L. Hudson Sr. (1812-1861) was a Welsh immigrant who came to the United States in 1837, became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1848, and worked in Cincinnati, Ohio as a gunmaker and gunsmith in the antebellum era and beginning of the Civil War. This rifle has an octagon barrel with a short turned down section at the muzzle for use with a starter, which is not included. "W.L. HUDSON/MAKER/CIN.O" is marked on the barrel. The rifle is fired using adjustable double set, single phase triggers. It has a spurred iron trigger guard and a nicely figured walnut buttstock. The percussion rifle was a type of rifle that utilized the percussion lock mechanism to fire a bullet or musket ball. The Percussion lock mechanism was an evolution of the flintlock mechanism used on earlier muskets and rifles, with the percussion rifle being introduced somewhere around 1820. The percussion rifle had a slight advantage when it came to rate of fire over its flintlock counterparts. The use of a percussion cap reduced the reloading time, meaning the average number of shots per minute would consistently fall between three and four per minute. The percussion lock was also very reliable in wet conditions, and the reverse is true for the flintlocks with the primer not being affected by having water in contact with it, while the powder was virtually incapable of being exposed to water. The overall condition is good. Dark plum patina. Strong action with fully functioning set trigger. The stock is solid with minimal blemishes and dings. Bright, shiny bore with sharp rifling. Clear markings. Drilled and tapped tang. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 32 inches. Caliber: .50 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos.
