Description:
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA Full-Stock LONG RIFLE w/ J.H. VAJEN Lock .41 Caliber
Frontier, Pioneer, Settler, Manifest Destiny
Here we present an antique Full Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Indianapolis, Indiana. The maker’s mark “J.H. VAJEN” is located on the lock plate. Vajen was involved in manufacturing and hardware and went on to become Indiana’s Quartermaster General during the American Civil War, a job he begrudgingly took on after being appointed by the governor, but appears to have done well.
The rifle’s octagonal barrel is in .41 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against aggressors. This rifle also features engraved scrollwork on the lock, double set triggers, brass hardware, and a full-length maple stock.
Though most long rifles were made in Pennsylvania, many were also made in the West. Cities such as Indianapolis, Dayton, and St. Louis were great places to pick up a new rifle or have one repaired as these were some of the last patches of civilization as folks headed further West on the Frontier searching for a place to homestead, trap, mine or run livestock.
The overall condition is good. The action is strong, and set triggers work. The bore is dim, in good shape with nice rifling. The stock has been repaired at the wrist and remains solid throughout. “J.H. VAJEN” is marked on the lock. A great piece of American history!
