LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA PERCUSSION LONGRIFLE SIGNED G. F. FAINOT CA. 1850’S.
Description: LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA PERCUSSION LONGRIFLE SIGNED G. F. FAINOT CA. 1850’S. 55” o/a with 39” octagon .60 cal. smoothbore barrel signed “C. F. FAINOT”. Mid 19th Century rifle using an original late 18th Century barrel by famed Lancaster Revolutionary War maker George Frederick Fainot. Percussion era lock and maple stock and brass mounts. Fair to good condition with metal having a grey patina with light to moderate salt and pepper. Stock with wear and repairs. Barrel is of considerable significance as Fainot rifle are very rare and highly sought after. Fainot came to Lancaster in the early 1770’s and set up shop there on Queen St. for 40 years. He was a highly skilled gunmaker born in Seloncour, France near the Swiss border and learned his trade there. It is also known that he supplied rifles to the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War conforming to a pattern set by William Henry (see Hornberger, THE LANCASTER LONG RIFLE, pp.28-29) and the barrel of this rifle may very well have originally come from one of these.
