LEWIS of TROY New York Antique PERCUSSION Rifle Nelson Lewis, Troy, New York, Circa 1860
Description: LEWIS of TROY New York Antique PERCUSSION Rifle Nelson Lewis, Troy, New York, Circa 1860 Here we present an Antique Back Action Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made by Nelson Lewis circa the mid-19th Century. Lewis was born in 1811 near Speigletown, NY. The first leg of his career was as a professional market hunter and he was apparently a very good shot. He then apprenticed under J.M. Caswell of Lansingburg, NY. He opened his own gun-making and gunsmithing business circa 1843. He is said to have favored gain-twist rifling so much that he couldn’t be persuaded to do otherwise in his barrels. Lewis remained in business until about the 1880s. This rifle would have been an essential tool for just about anyone in the 19th Century, but especially those on the Frontier. Its octagonal barrel is in .40 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression by man or beast. It is pretty handy is length and weight and would have been ideal for the one-gun hunter who wasn’t going after game much larger than deer. This one has a neat, adjustable tang-mounted aperture rear sight in addition to the barrel mounted open sight. There is also an added hooded fine post and bead front sight dovetailed behind the blade. The flat of the muzzle is marked “Burnham” and what appears to be “1960”. The skirt around the hammer is chipped and a leaden piece has been fastened there, probably to protect both hammer and percussion nipple. Maker’s marking near the breech of the barrel. The overall condition is very good. Very good bore with reflective lands. The action is excellent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 29-1/2 inches. Caliber: .40 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1900 #190820 SOLD Antique: Yes |
