Here we present an antique American Percussion Rifle made circa the mid-1800s. The percussion rifle was a type of rifle that utilized the percussion lock mechanism to fire a bullet or musket ball. The Percussion lock mechanism was an evolution of the flintlock mechanism used on earlier muskets and rifles, with the percussion rifle being introduced somewhere around 1820. The percussion rifle had a slight advantage when it came to rate of fire over its flintlock counterparts. The use of a percussion cap reduced the reloading time, meaning the average number of shots per minute would consistently fall between three and four per minute. The percussion lock was also very reliable in wet conditions, and the reverse is true for the flintlocks with the primer not being affected by having water in contact with it, while the powder was virtually incapable of being exposed to water.
This rifle would have also been used to put food on the table or defend the homestead against unwanted intruders!

The overall condition is good. The action is strong with a replacement hammer and nipple. Original mixed gray, and brown patinas. The forend has a repair on the top right and a sliver missing at the left side. The maple striped stock is solid with an average amount of handling. The buttplate is slightly oversized. The bore is very good with serviceable rifling.
