Here we present an antique George Spangler Over/Under Combination Rifle-Shotgun, manufactured circa the mid-19th Century in Monroe, Wisconsin. This Double Rifle features superposed barrels in .44 caliber. Each barrel has its own hammer and ramrod for loading. This example sports a few extra features, being a brass patchbox and furniture along with double set triggers. This rifle has seen its fair share of history. It would have been used to defend the homestead or put food on the table. In a day when most firearms were single-shot, this piece offered two, as well as the versatility to hunt multiple types of game, or make a quick follow-up shot.

“G. SPANGLER MONROE WIS” is atop the barrel. George Spangler was born in Pennsylvania to Samuel Spangler, a prominent flintlock rifle maker. Samuel and George moved to Wisconsin around 1846 with their family. Together they became a one-two-punch, taking their family business to the top of the percussion industry. George continued working until the year 1900, passing away in 1914. They specialized in shotguns, rifles, and even over/under rifles such as this. Here is a neat example that features Goulcher locks with game scenes engraved.

The overall condition is very good. Patina throughout. Clear maker marking. The actions are excellent. The bores are in good condition with nice rifling in the rifled bore. The stock is solid. A great combination gun unique to the northern US, made in Wisconsin!
