PHILADELPHIA Made Antique HALF STOCK Perc. Rifle
Description: PHILADELPHIA Made Antique HALF STOCK Perc. Rifle Made in the Mid 1800’s Here we present a maker unknown Half Stock percussion rifle, likely manufactured in Pennsylvania circa the middle of the 19th Century. The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle: “From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination. Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.” This rifle would have been used primarily for hunting and homestead defense in the early years of American history. It features a relatively short, heavy, fully octagonal barrel in .41 caliber. It is also equipped with a pathbox and double set triggers. The lock is marked “J GOLCHER”. Josh Golcher was a lockmaker who was located in Philadelphia, PA circa the mid-19th century. His locks were sold to gunsmiths all over the country. He made percussion and flint gun locks circa 1825 through 1860. The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are legible. The bore is dark with strong rifling. The stock has a thin, stable crack at the wrist and a bit of repair on the right side of the forearm. The action on this rifle is strong. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30 inches. Caliber: .41 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
