c1850s Smoothbore for the Western Market

Here we present an antique J.H. Rector of Syracuse, New York Long Rifle, made circa the 1850s, and Sold by Robert Liddle & Co. of San Francisco, California. John Rector was a local gunsmith in Syracuse, NY who produced high quality firearms from the 1830’s through the 1860’s. Rector’s specialty was heavy percussion rifles and plains rifles for westward expansion. A historical directory from 1850 shows that his gun making business was located on Water Street in Syracuse. His maker’s mark is on one side of the rear sight, and Robert Liddle’s mark and “S.F. CAL” is on the other. Liddle’s first company was named for only himself: “R. Liddle & Co.” He would also work under the name Sportsmen’s Emporium as well as Liddle & Kaeding.

This piece features an octagonal barrel with the aforementioned markings stamped into the top flat around the rear sight. There is a turned down, round segment at the muzzle. This almost certainly once had a smaller, rifled bore in a very heavy barrel that was bored larger (.585 approximately) and smooth to suit somebody’s use, perhaps against larger animals such as bears or bison on the Western Frontier. The front sight is part of an old US silver coin that was fit for the purpose, the silver being a fairly bright and visible choice of metal. The barrel tang has a spot for a rear aperture sight. The butt stock is decorated on one side with a stag and a dog in German silver. The other side features a brass patch box. Double set triggers round out this very interesting muzzle loader that made its way from coast to coast right before or around the time of the Civil War!

The overall condition is good. The action is strong. The bore is in good shape, smooth and dark. All markings are clear and legible. All around the stock is solid and stable. The barrel tang was cracked at the screw and subsequently reinforced. The nipple is a bit peened but could be replaced if desired. The barrel is marked “JH RECTOR & Co./SYRACUSE/N.Y./1203” and “H. LIDDLE & Co. S.F. CAL”. The lock is marked “C. BAKER”. This example comes with a stag game scene embossed powder flask that is in very good condition. This is a great piece of history that would be excellent on display!
