Here we present an antique Half Stock American Plains .51 Caliber Smoothbore Musket with Rifle Sights, made circa the 1840s. This gun has a large bore that would have made it prime for hunting large game and a short overall stature that would have made it easier to carry or pack long distances as well as more maneuverable in tight quarters like brush. It is equipped with a Goulcher lock, a family of lock makers that was nothing short of prolific during the time period. The patchbox on the right side of the gun is unique and is a simple eagle with the door in the center. The barrel is stout and octagonal with rifle sights. The large smooth bore would have made this gun a bit easier to load quickly, a large advantage when dealing with predators of the 2-legged variety.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have an even finish and patina. The markings are clear. The striped maple stock has seen its fair share of use and weather. It has a couple of small repairs around the lock and remains solid on the whole. The bore is dim and smooth. The action is strong. This is a really neat piece of history that one can imagine saw the Western US when it was wild.
