Kimber Model 84L Classic 270 Win with Weaver Scope, Original Box
Description: The Kimber 84L Classic is one of the few rifles that combines ultra-lightweight with the advantages of a Mauser claw extractor for true controlled round feed (CRF). The latter ensures that no matter what environmental conditions the rifle is being used in, the rifle will always extract the empty case ensuring a quick follow-up short when it is needed. The 84L was designed around the idea of minimizing the physical dimensions of the rifle compared to rifles by other manufacturers such as the Winchester Model 70. The barrel has a light contour while the stock sports a slender profile for its entire length. The bolt body is machined to reduce the dimensions compared to its competitors, as is the bolt handle. Despite this, the 84L manages to keep its elements flowing together smoothly, providing it with an elegant appearance. While the 84M was designed for the .308 family of cartridges, the 84L is designed around the longer .30-06 family. Some versions do chamber other cartridges like the 7mm Remington Magnum and 300 Win Mag. This example is chambered for the .270 Winchester, a popular rifle cartridge. There is a small scratch in the finish on the back of the tang although it is rather hard to see. There are two shallow dimples in the wood just in front of the forward sling stud. These could be steamed out rather easily. The rest of the rifle is in excellent condition, with the bore being especially bright, though some fouling is present. The rifle is fitted with a simple Weaver K4-F scope. There is a small amount of rust on the left side of the scope’s eyepiece. Otherwise, the finish is in superb shape. The scope covers are a little loose on this scope, and it is recommended that they be replaced. The rifle does come with its original factory box. The .270 Winchester was originally introduced in 1925 but was not immediately popular due to the relatively recent introduction of the .30-06 Springfield in 1906. It stood out compared to other cartridges in due to having a bullet diameter of 0.277 inches (the “.270” in the name refers to the bore diameter). The only other cartridge to use this bullet diameter prior to the .270 Win was the Chinese 6.8x57 Mauser cartridge used in the Model 1907 Chinese Mauser. Even today that cartridge is mostly unheard of (many of the Model 1907s were rechambered for the standard German 8x57 Mauser). There is some debate about whether Winchester got the idea for the .270 from the Chinese round or if they simply took inspiration from the more familiar 7x57 Mauser. Another popular theory is that Winchester simply did not want a 7mm-06 as the Germans had already come up with the 7x64mm, so they multiplied “.308” by 90%, which equals .277. The .270 picked up in popularity after World War II once American hunters realized the .270 could shoot a flatter trajectory than its cousin the .30-06. Available bullets for the .270 range from the light weight 90 gr bullets up to the heavy 160 gr bullets. As a general rule of thumb, the 90 to 110 gr bullets are for varmints and small deer, 130 gr for mid-size deer, sheep, mountain goats, and antelope, while the 140 gr to 160 gr are for large deer, elk, caribou, and even moose. The 130 gr bullet is most popular followed closely by the 150 gr bullet. SOLD Rifle Caliber: .270 Winchester Manufacturer: Kimber Mfg.
