Description:
Dietrich Apel & J.M. Penrod .416 Rigby Left Hand Custom Mauser.
Based on a left hand, Mauser length, double square bridge action by Crandall Tool & Machine which has a mauser type axtractor with a jeweled bolt body, 3-panel checkered bolt knob, a 3-position M70 type safety, a Springfield '03 type trigger and one piece Mauser type bottom metal with a hinged, straddle floor plate an an inside-the-bow release. The rifle holds 4 rounds down in the magazine.
The action bridges are milled for early Dave Talley top-attach, 1", lever-locking, quick detachable rings holding a matte finish Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-6x24mm with a Duplex reticle.
Starting with a MATCO barrel blank that is hand struck to a 26" half octagon / half round barrel with a fully machined spear point quarter rib that is hanf-filed and has one standing / 2 folding express sights lined in gold and engraved with their distance (50,50,100 yards) and a fully machined banded/hooded front sight with removable sight hood and sight blade with a brass bead. The forward sling swivel attachment is mounted to the bottom of the barrel and inletted into the barrel channel of the stock.
"Dietrich Apel - Gunmacker" is engraved on top of the quarter rib and "J.M. Penrod" over "1987" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel for New Hampshire gunmaker Mark Penrod. Mr. Penrod did all the metal work for a good customer in the late 1980's and Mr Apel stocked the rifle sometime later.
Nicely figuered and expertly laid out, CA English walnut stock has a 13 3/4" LOP over a skeleton butt plate with checkered center and smooth border, a left hand beaded traditional style cheekpiece, a "shellhammer" chin strap behind the smooth, solid steel grip cap that slides sideways to reveal the hidden grip trap, and a "drop-belly" shaped stock. Two panel point pattern checkering on the grip with Mullered borders and a wrap point pattern checkering with Mullered borders on the forend. Ebony forend tip, and an inletted rear sling swivel attachment along the toe line of the stock.
Metal is finished in a rust blue and remains 98% overall. The stock is also very good with verious handling marks here or there and what appears mostly received in the gun safe. Overall, the rifle is excellent with a perfect bore and feeds flawlessly.
