** SOLD ** Australian Army Lithgow SMLE/SHT LE No.1 Mk3 Bolt Action Rifle in .303 British **Mfg 1918 - 3MD Marked**
Description: Presented is an Australian made Lithgow SMLE/SHT LE bolt action rifle chambered in .303 British caliber. The Lee–Enfield or Enfield is a bolt-action, magazine-fed repeating rifle that served as the main firearm of the military forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth during the first half of the 20th century, and was the British Army's standard rifle from its official adoption in 1895 until 1957. The WWI versions are often referred to as the "SMLE", which is short for the common "Short, Magazine, Lee–Enfield" variant. A shorter and lighter version of the original MLE—the Rifle, Short, Magazine, Lee–Enfield or SMLE (sometimes spoken as "Smelly," rather than "S-M-L-E")—was introduced on 1 January 1904. The barrel was now halfway in length between the original long rifle and the carbine, at 25.2 inches (640 mm). The SMLE's visual trademark was its blunt nose, with only the bayonet boss protruding a small fraction of an inch beyond the nosecap, being modelled on the Swedish Model 1894 cavalry carbine. This particular example is in very good servicable condition with wear that would be sexpected for a service rifle made in 1918....towards the end of WW1. There are some dinks in the wood and some high edge and muzzle wear but nothing serious. Protected front sight and adjustable rear. The barrel has a good bore and strong rifling. This fine Aussie rifle would make a great addition to a collection of militaria. PRICE: $695.00 We are Antique & Modern Firearms in Lexington, KY, a dealer of fine firearms since 1974.
