SELDOM SEEN MARLIN MODEL 1888 OCTAGON RIFLE IN, .44-40 CALIBER, #25XXX, MADE 1889
Description: SELDOM SEEN MARLIN MODEL 1888 OCTAGON RIFLE IN, .44-40 CALIBER, #25XXX, MADE 1889. This is the most difficult Marlin Lever rifle to find as only 4,814 were made between 1888-1889. They were offered in .32-20, .38-40 and .44-40. Standard barrel length for these was 24" and 4,312 were made in this length. Add to this that only 1,727 were made in .44-40 makes finding one of these difficult as survival rates are small. It seems most of the Model 1888s I've encountered in the last decades have been very hard used- in all calibers. Easily identified by the concave bolt on the receiver top, this example with 24" octagon barrel is in solid condition. Metal surfaces are mostly gray/brown with some minor very aged blue on the most protected areas of the receiver and some good blue on the loading gate. Screws are good, markings are sharp the the stock and forend show only very light handling with tight wood to metal fit. I removed the butt place, wiped off 135 years of grime from the inside to reveal a matching serial number to the frame. Action is tight, half cock on the hammer is secure and the bore is surprisingly fine with deep rifling, a little dark with only minor scattered roughness. Original buckhorn rear sight with small blade front sight (Looks like a Winchester variety front sight blade). A good and honest Model 1888 in the most desirable caliber. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .44-40 Winchester Manufacturer: MARLIN Model: 1888 OCT. RIFLE Serial Number: 25XXX Barrel Length: 24" OCT. Condition: VG Bore Condition: FINE |
