Antique J.M. MARLIN Model 1889 LEVER ACTION Repeating Rifle .38-40 WCF
Made in 1893
Description: Antique J.M. MARLIN Model 1889 LEVER ACTION Repeating Rifle .38-40 WCF Made in 1893 Here we present an antique J.M. Marlin Model 1889 Rifle in .38-40 WCF, made in 1893 in New Haven, Connecticut. Dubbed as the “New Safety Repeating Rifle,” the 1889 Marlin was a mid-sized, redesigned 1888 model. Many key features of these style lever action rifles had already been patented by several people, but John Marlin incorporated all the features into a single functional firearm. The most noticeable difference is the solid top with its side-ejection system. The new model also utilized a cartridge carrier that raised automatically, closing the end of the magazine after the head of the cartridge had passed into the carrier preventing the next cartridge from entering the carrier and jamming the action. This was an important feature, since the rifle was produced in a variety of calibers ranging from .32-20 to .45-70 GOVT, a feature that would not be duplicated by competing Winchesters for several more years. Overall, the 1889 Marlin was well received on the frontier and nationwide. More than 55,000 guns left the factory between 1889 and 1903. In its day, the model was considered state-of-the-art. The overall condition is good. Weathered, then cleaned some time ago, regaining some patina. The action is strong. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The rear sight has been replaced with a Winchester Model 94 sight which slides a bit side to side in the dovetail. The magazine tube has been shortened and the dovetail under the barrel filled. The walnut stock shows much use and remains solid. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 24 inches. Caliber: .38-40 WCF Overall condition as seen in photos.
