Antique Rare Very Early 1881 Marlin With 26" Barrel. Only 277 Ever Made.. 40-60 Caliber. Near Excellent Bore. Excellent mechanics.
Description: SOLD....Antique 1881 Marlin.. Whoops !!!! Sorry for the two upside down photos.. VERY RARE special order 26” octagon barrel.. Only 277 made with 26” barrels.... Here is a very nice and clean original 1881 Marlin. S/N 1727 so absolutely first year manufacture.. Caliber is in 40-60 Marlin or 40-65 Winchester.. Winchester use 5 grains more black powder than Marlin.. These calibers are identical and 40-65 Winchester loading dies are the same.. This is a very rare gun... The barrel of course is very rare length of 26”..... 28” was standard for the 1881's. William S. Brophy book on the Marlins says only 277 ever made.. As you can see in the photos, it has absolutely not been shortened.. The sight and mag tube dovetails are in the correct location and the end of the muzzle tells the story of it not being messed with.. The gun has no finish remaining as you can see and is a speckled medium to gray patina and not cleaned on or messed with. It is not pitted... It has a near excellent bright bore with some darkness down in the groves.. NO pitting, no rings or bulges.. It has the original front and rear sights.. The mechanics are excellent as well. It feeds and ejects the slightly smaller 40-60 Winchester cartridge perfectly so I know it will do the same with the proper 40-60 Marlin or 45-60 Winchester... I did not shoot it as this is not the caliber it is chambered for.. I do not have any of the proper ammo to test fire it but I am sure it will shoot just fine.. Both hammer notches are perfect and positive.. The wood is near excellent as well as you can see. NO splits or cracks and fits tight like new to the metal.. The wood fits tight and proud to the metal and shows very little handling dings and scratches and still has most varnish remaining.. Very hard to find wood on any of these Marlins in this condition as the forearms are always split and crack on the right side were the wood is very thin to leave room for the loading gate that slides under it.. It is even full and proud at the butt plate.. Great color and not dark and oil stained... The screw heads are all sharp and clean and not all burred up from tinkering.. I have had it in my personal collection for several years.. I am starting to sell guns out of the 30 plus year collection as it is time for them to find new homes.. I can't take'em with me... This is a nice rare gun and what does a 1 of 1000 Winchester cost you today ??? Don't miss it and call me at 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. $50 insured shipping.. Thank you for looking... SOLD Antique: Yes |
