Classic OCTAGONAL BARREL J.M. MARLIN M94 Lever Action Rifle .38-40 WCF C&R
WILD WEST, COWBOY, L.L. HEPBURN
Description: Classic OCTAGONAL BARREL J.M. MARLIN M94 Lever Action Rifle .38-40 WCF C&R WILD WEST, COWBOY, L.L. HEPBURN Here we present a C&R J.M. Marlin Model 94 Rifle in .38-40 Winchester Center Fire, made between 1906 and 1920, likely around 1910 to 1912 based on estimates according to serial numbers, in New Haven, Connecticut. Serial number information to determine year of manufacture on Marlin rifles are practically non-existent between the years of 1906 until after World War II. Marlin was one of Winchester’s biggest competitors for the lever action market in the late-19th and into the 20th Century. Originally patented on August 1, 1893 by L.L. Hepburn, the 1894 featured a new locking bolt and two-piece firing pin, alongside an improved one-piece trigger and a short receiver that allowed cartridge compatibility with the 1888 and 1889 models. It features a solid top frame with side ejection and a smooth action. These would have been fantastic companions to Colt Single Action Army Revolvers in the same cartridge chambering, just as their main competitor Winchester did with their Models 1873 & 1892. The .38-40 actually fired a .40 caliber bullet with very similar ballistics to the modern .40 S&W, even with black powder! The Model 1894 and its successors found particular favor in Canada, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest, where precipitation combined with cold temperatures sometimes caused top-eject designs to freeze solid. During the Klondike Gold Rush, the solid-top Marlin design was preferred by many prospectors facing subzero temperatures and dangerous animals, since the solid top frame was better at keeping freezing rain, snow and dirt out of the operating parts of the action. The overall condition is near fine. Original blue finish and patina. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The walnut stock is solid, showing use. This is a fantastic classic with an octagonal barrel chambered in the venerable .38-40! Own the original! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 25 inches.
