.45-70 GOVT Antique MARLIN Model 1881 Lever Action Rifle
Made Circa 1883
Description: .45-70 GOVT Antique MARLIN Model 1881 Lever Action Rifle Made Circa 1883 Here we present an antique J.M. Marlin Model 1881 Rifle in .45-70 GOVT, made in 1883 in New Haven, Connecticut. Only about 20,000 produced of this model, but out of those only 4,769 were chambered in .45-70, making it rare and desirable. Marlin had been producing the single shot Ballard rifles for some time before making a repeating rifle. The Model 1881 was the first foray and from then on, that is what the firm became known for. One famous user of the Model 1881 Marlin was Indian fighter Brig. Gen. George C. Crook. One of the rifles that Crook passed down to his godson Webb C. Hayes (son of President Rutherford B. Hayes) was a Model 1881 Marlin in .45-70, serial number “4254”, just 19 below this example’s serial of “4273”. It was Webb Hayes’ favorite rifle on hunting trips with his godfather. The gun now resides in the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, Ohio. The overall condition is good. Dark, weathered patina. The action is strong. This rifle could use a deep clean inside. The bore is patinated and has strong rifling. The stock has some brass tack decorations and remains solid, with much use and weathering, and some shrinking at the butt plate. There are also a couple of marred screw heads. Certainly a rifle that appears to have been there and done that! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 28 inches. Caliber: .45-70 GOVT Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $2400 #250195 SOLD Antique: Yes |
