Antique 1881 Marlin..
Very Early 3 Digit S/N....45-70 Caliber. 28" Octagon Barrel. Near Excellent Bright Bore. Priced Right....
Description: SOLD...Very early antique 3 digit S/N 1881 Marlin 45-70... Here we have a very early 3 digit S/N 1881 Marlin in the very sought after 45-70 caliber. Has the standard 28” octagon barrel. S/N 516 and no doubt made first year production if not the first couple months !!!!!. These guns are rare and getting very hard to find in decent condition. These guns have the heavy receiver with thicker flanges in the front and rear of the receiver. My old blue book gives 200% to 300% premium for these guns under 600 S/N range. I have this one priced at about what the regular and later 81's in 45-70 are selling for.... Earliest one I have ever owned. I sold this to my friend that I am selling for years ago. The bore is near excellent. It is mostly bright and shiny with just a few small spots of roughness. These will probably clean out with some shooting and cleaning but either way, this gun has a great and way above average bore... Very strong and deep rifling all the way through. The gun functions perfectly. The safety notch on the hammer is a little weak but still holds. These should NEVER be used as a safety.... even when working perfectly.. Full cock notch is perfect and positive with no issues.. It feeds, fires and ejects just fine and shoots great as you would expect with a near excellent bore. The metal is a smooth medium to dark brown patina with no pitting. Never cleaned on or messed with and just the way you love to find these guns. The wood is typical Marlin. Forearm has NO splits, cracks or repairs which is unusual with these 81's as most have the big cracks and splinters missing on the right side because of the odd loading gate sliding into the forearm. It is however undersized at the receiver and the forearm cap. Still very nice looking. The butt stock fits good and has a couple very small and minor chips at the upper and lower tang. No other splits or cracks and looks very nice as well. Still has the original shotgun style butt plate. The hammer screw is burred up but the other screws look fine. Markings are all good. The rear sight looks like a period of use replacement ???? {see photo}.. The front sight is a flat base with brass bead in front and a set screw on the left side. This is a later replacement as it should have the rocky mountain blade type. It still has a great sighting picture when looking down the sights. About all there is on this one. Just a nice looking big frame 81 marlin that show some normal use but nothing abused. This is a great shooter and collector of these very early 81's... They are very large and heavy guns and they beat Winchester to the draw by five years on a lever action rifle that would handle the pressures of the 45-70 Government round when the famous 1886 finally came to life. Very well made guns indeed. If this one does not sell, I just might buy it back from my friend !!!! Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. $50 insured shipping.. Thank you for looking and see all my other antique firearms I have for sale and more on the way soon.. SOLD Antique: Yes |
