Antique 1889 Marlin 38-40 Special Order 28" Octagon Barrel.
Description: SOLD...Antique 1889 Marlin 38-40 caliber 28” octagon barrel. Decent looking ole 89 with a special order 28” octagon barrel. Caliber is in 38-40. S/N 79938 and made in 1892. Gun is all original. The bore is rough and it does not shoot a cast bullet very well but shoots a jacketed bullet much better. No rings or bulges but has some deep pitting but still shows rifling. It feeds and fires and extracts but does not eject correctly. I installed a new ejector but did not fix the problem. The end of the lever inside has been welded on and I think it needs a new lever or bolt to bring the bolt back far enough to eject the cartridge. I just don't have the time to mess with it any more. Hammer notches are correct and positive and no issues in that area. The metal is a dark brown patina with some minor roughness at the end of the muzzle and a little on the upper tang. Never cleaned on or messed with. A little surface crud on the top of the receiver as you can see in the photos The markings are all very good and readable. Has the original front and rear sights with the front sight being the rocky mountain blade type and the rear standard buck horn with original elevator. The screw heads show some wear and some are burred up but all are serviceable. The wood is solid with the forearm fitting tight with no cracks or splits and just a couple mars and scratches. The butt stock fits very good with some slivers missing at the upper tang as you can see. It is solid with no other splits or cracks and just a few honest handling scratches and dings. Just a well worn ole 89 Marlin that needs a lever and maybe a bolt to make it work again. Does have the extra length special order 28” barrel and if you need some parts or wood or do the repairs to make a shooter at a reasonable price. I am listing it for less than I have in it and open for offers give me a call. Have been going through the safe and listing some guns I have had for years and no time to mess with them. If it does not sell, it goes to the sell barn or gets parted out.. Give me a call at 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. SOLD Antique: Yes |
