Marlin 1881 Lever Action .45-70 Government
Marlin's First Lever Action
Description: You are looking at a significant piece of American fiream history. This is a Marlin Model 1881, 3rd style, chambered in .45/70. Rifle functions well. While the rear sight is not original, it is a valuable replacement. Rifle has a nice coverage of bluing and brown patina. Wood seems to be all original and not refinished. We are seeing signs of a slight crack beginning in the toe as seen in pictures. Loading gate functions as it should. Bore is shiny and fairly sharp. Mainspring has plenty of tension. Wonderful condition for a rifle this age! From Flayderman's Guide (9th edition), p.138: "The first Marlin lever action rifle. The key patents in production and design were by the prolific Andrew Burgess, but but John Marlin and others contributed patent details. It was Marlin who put all the features together into the finished-and highly regarded-firearm. Capable of holding large calibers like the 45-70, the Model 1881 was years ahead of the Model 1886 Winchester, and proved a very popular rifle." We accept USPS Money Order or cashier’s check for immediate shipping. Shipping costs are actual postage, adult signature required, to your home (because of this rifle's "antique" designation). We will pay the insurance for the amount sold. All items are for sale locally, so make contact as soon as you make your decision.
