VERY FINE CONDITION MARLIN MODEL 1889 ROUND BARREL RIFLE IN SCARCE .32-20 CALIBER, #95XXX, MADE 1893.
Description: VERY FINE CONDITION MARLIN MODEL 1889 ROUND BARREL RIFLE IN SCARCE .32-20 CALIBER, #95XXX, MADE 1893. The Model 1889 was Marlin's first side-eject lever action rifle- the previous Models 1881 and 1888 were top eject. The model was introduced in 1889 and was discontinued when the improved Model 1894 was introduced in that year. Aside from 34 rifles made in .25-20 (probably at the very end of production as this was a standard chambering for the Model 1894), the .32-20 was the least caliber produced with 15,441 made. For comparison there were 18,635 made in .38-40 and 20,934 made in .44-40. Considering they were made in both octagon and round variations, if made in equal quantities, that would mean there were less than 8,000 rifles made in .32-20 with round barrels. Most M-1889s that I've seen have seen hard service and finding a high condition example is difficult- especially considering their limited quantity produced over a few years worth of manufacturing before the model was discontinued. This example retains fine bright blue on the receiver with normal dulling/thinning on the edges and upper tang with the balance including the loading gate deep blue. The barrel shows fine blue with minor age/thinning only. The mag tube is similar to the barrel with some gray/brown mixing on part of the bottom section. There is some good case color on the hammer sides and some light, faded case color on the lever sides (more on the left side). Original buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and factory Rocky Mountain blade front sight. The bore is surprisingly excellent with no pitting and the stock and forend are also excellent with most of the finish intact and tight wood to metal fit. Even the forend cap retains some fine blue. One of the better 1889s I've seen in a while and in the more scarce chambering. A really attractive 128 year old Marlin!
