Marlin 1893 SPECIAL ORDER 1/2 OCTAGON 2 BARRELS .32 & .38-55, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Marlin, 1902, .32WS; .38-55, 7lbs. 11oz; 7lbs. 5oz., Chokes, LOP 13 1/8" Serial Number: 221422 There are some decent Marlin Model 1893 rifles for sale on the internet, and then there is this one. When it comes to value, desirability, and collectability, several characteristics set one M1893 apart from all the rest. First is condition…most you see are showing their age and some are nicer than others. Next, special-order features and desirable characteristics play a strong role in establishing desirability and value. This Marlin Model 1893, sn221422 produced in 1902 and documented with a Cody Firearms Museum information sheet, has both condition and special-order features that are highly desirable. The Cody information shows the rifle shipped in .32 H.P.S caliber (.32 Winchester Special…Marlin did not want the reference to Winchester in the caliber marking, but same exact cartridge and readily available), takedown configured, 26” half octagon barrel, and half magazine tube. Added sometime later either by the factory or by happenstance, is a 24” half octagon barrel in the very desirable big bore .38-55 WCF with half magazine. Because the specs are the same as the .32 WS barrel, it was likely ordered from the factory to fit the original rifle. The two calibers are very versatile; the .32 WS great for deer size game and the .38-55 WCF good for the largest North American game including bear, elk, and moose with a well-placed shot. This rifle configured with ½ octagon, half mag, and takedown feature with a second barrel makes for a very cool set! The condition of the gun is excellent inside and out. The .32 WS barrel was used the most, retaining 90% factory blue with some wear at the carry/balance point, light handling marks, clear sharp stampings, and A SHINY BORE WITH STRONG SHARP RIFLING RATING 9.5 ON A SCALE OF 10. The .38-55 WCF barrel has 99% dark factory blue, light handling marks on some of the hard edges, clear sharp stampings, and A SHINY MORE WITH STRONG SHARP RIFLING RATING 9.5 ON A SCALE OF 10. The action is in excellent mechanical condition, with clean screws, retaining 90% factory case color that is thinning but there, the lever 98% factory case color, and hammer 50% case color. The top tang has the MODEL 1893 marking which phased out in 1905. Guns after that time were marked “’93”. The wood is original to the gun and fits the metal well with normal handling marks and some decent figure. All in all, a very clean rifle 123 years old that somebody took care of and cherished. How many rifles from that era have nearly perfect bore with strong sharp rifling and no pitting? Few and far between and if you are going to shoot the gun (as you should!) it matters. With similar care from future owners, this rifle will be taking game in the next century, maybe by one of your kinfolks you pass it down to. See the specifications below. Thanks for looking!
