Marlin Classic Series Model 1894 .357 Magnum, Ruger Production, New in Box
Description: The original Marlin Model 1894 was produced from 1894 until 1934. It was chambered for Winchester cartridges that were popular in the late 19th-mid 20th centuries. These included the .25-20 WCF, .32-20 WCF, .38-40 WCF, and .44-40 WCF. Most will notice that Marlin did not put “Winchester”, “Win”, or “WCF” on the barrel of any 1894 built during the original run. Many believe that Marlin simply refused to stamp a competitor’s name onto their rifles, and instead stamped the barrels with their own name after the cartridge number instead of Winchester’s. For example, the .44-40 WCF was usually stamped “44-40 M” where the “M” stood for Marlin. While this story may be partly true, there was another reason why this was done. Most of the Marlin-label cartridges were slightly different from Winchester specs, mainly in bullet weight and shape. Perhaps they simply fed through the Marlin action better than Winchester factory load. Thirty fives years after being discontinued, the Model 1894 returned in 1969 chambered for more modern cartridges such as the .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum. Production continued at the original Marlin facility until 2007 when Remington Outdoors Company purchased the Marlin name and machinery. By then, the machinery used to make the rifles was worn out and the first examples of what came to be known as “Remlins” (contraction of the names Remington and Marlin) were of exceptionally poor quality. Remington had to purchase new machinery and eventually, their later examples of the 1894 were of good quality, if not as good as the originals. With the bankruptcy of the Remington Outdoor Company, Ruger, well-known for their single-action revolvers, purchased the rights to the Marlin name and machinery much as Remington had previously done. This time around, Ruger made sure their rifles were of a high quality standard before shipping them. Although they first resurrected the popular Model 1895 in .45-70, newer examples of the Model 1894 were introduced in 2023. The new-in-box rifle shown here is the Classic Series Model 1894 chambered in the venerable .357 Remington Magnum. It is similar to the Remington-made 1894s in that it has a crossbolt safety. Otherwise, it is a traditional 1894 in carbine form. The round barrel is 18.63 inches in length and is made using cold hammer-forged alloy steel. The bore has conventional rifling consisting of 6 grooves with a 1 in 16 inches right-hand twist. Although Marlin was famous for their Micro-Groove rifling (introduced in the 1950s), they discontinued its use and returned to the old style “Ballard” rifling for their .357 and .44 barrels in the 1990s, long before Remington bought out the company. To continue use of the older-style rifling was a wise decision on Ruger’s part. Ballard or conventional rifling will work well with just about any type of bullet. Micro-groove rifling, however, works very poorly with cast lead bullets, the small grooves filling up with lead too easily, and over time, making the bore too tight for the bullets to pass through if the rifle is not frequently cleaned. Cast lead bullets are popular with hand loaders because they are less expensive than copper-jacketed bullets. Since handloading and Cowboy Action Shooting go together with Marlin Lever rifles like peanut butter and jelly goes together with bread, discontinuing the use of Micro-groove rifling made sense in the long run. Sighting is performed using the classic semi-buckhorn rear sight, which is adjustable, and the hooded brass bead front sight. The magazine tube will hold 9 rounds of .357 Magnum or 10 rounds of .38 Special. The metal is finished in a nice satin blue. The Marlin’s looks are rounded out by the wood furniture which is beautiful set of American Black Walnut. SOLD Rifle Caliber: .357 Magnum, .38 Special Manufacturer: Marlin Firearms Co.
