Marlin Model 1894 '94 Short Rifle 44-40 Star Tang

  ( On Hold - David H. )   This is a scarcely seen , early Marlin Model '94.  It is a short rifle, with a 20"  octagonal barrel, .44-40,  full mag, with the S curved carbine type butt plate.  I have only seen a handfull of these large caliber , depression era Marlins with the star marked tang, they all were similar with the same large serial number stamping, in this same range.  These were marked with the star as a quality control stamp, indicating that the rifle met the highest standards of workmanship.  These star tangs were found in the mid 1920's - this rifle is about 100 years old.  Marlin offered many different configurations, this is a rare Factory short rifle - it has not been cut down from a longer barrel - the dovetails are factory machined, muzzle crown is correct.  The rifle retains a good amount of case colors - fading to silver on the bottom of receiver and lever - stronger color on the receiver.  The receiver is factory drilled/tapped for the Hepburn receiver sight. The barrel and mag tube have very good blueing with scattered light scratches, most notably near the muzzle.  The bore is great! the lands and grooves are bright, sharp and strong the whole way - easily a 9 or better, very nice bore.  The wood is original, unsanded, with scattered marks, light dings, scratches and some staining at the buttplate, but solid and tight with a fair amount of original finish.   The action works perfectly - it feeds and ejects as it should. Overall this is a great little rifle in a very hard to find configuration, in a great caliber.  Just honest wear and use from the last 100 years, but still a much better than average gun. ***** This is a 'modern' gun and must ship to a FFL, C&R okay.  Please know your local laws - I must comply withh all state shipping and transfer regs.
