Marlin Model 1895M 18.5” Ported JM stamp .450 Marlin, Excellent Condition
Description: Marlin designed the 1895M as a “guide gun”, a rifle used by those operating in the back country or woods for use against large predators in the CPX3 and CPX4 classes. Compared to the 1895G which is chambered for the .45-70 Gov’t, the 1895M is chambered for Marlin’s own .450 Marlin cartridge. This is essentially a shortened .458 Win Mag with a wider belt. In other words, it is a short, belted magnum round. The genesis for this cartridge lies in the fact that many handloaders enjoy shooting hot-loaded .45-70 cartridges in the 1895 rifle. While the 1895 can certainly handle these loads, older rifles chambered for the ol’ .45-70 Gov’t cannot. Marlin sought to offer an alternative to this practice with the .450 cartridge. It was developed from the .458x2” American which is a wildcat cartridge. Rifles like the 1895G/M are especially popular in Alaska for their light weight and heavy firepower. Tracking through thick brush with a long and heavy rifle is not optimal, hence why short rifles and carbines like these exist. These handy features also make the 1895M suitable for use anywhere in the backwoods or mountains. The 1895M shown here has a factory ported, 18.5” barrel which uses Ballard rifling, making it suitable for use with either jacketed or cast bullets. The receiver is drilled and tapped from the factory for the purpose of mounting a scope. The hole spacing is designed to fit the Weaver 63B scope base. The magazine tube holds 4 cartridges while one is in the chamber for a total of 5 rounds. The rifle is pre-owned but in excellent shape. It has the famous “JM” stamp and was produced before Remington bought out Marlin. Best guess is that it was made around 2001. The stock exhibits only the most minute wear and the bluing is in immaculate shape. The butt pad does exhibit some flaring at the lower edges. Perhaps Marlin was little too eager the have the rifle shipped out. The bore looks like it left the factory yesterday and exhibits no rust or pitting. There is no box.
