This is the quintessential deer hunting rifle. Marlin rifles have probably been used to hunt more deer than any other rifle, with the likely exception of the Winchester ’94. The Marlin 336 has been around since 1948, but the original Model 1936 and Model 36 go as far back as 1936 and 1937 respectively. The Model 336 uses a 20” micro-groove barrel and is chambered for the classic .35 Remington. This cartridge was introduced in 1906. I have some experience with the cartridge via Remington’s Model 81 semi-automatic rifle and their Model 141 Pump-action rifle as well. It is a pleasant round to shoot and is very accurate out to 100-150 yards. It popular for hunting deer and elk and is effective for defense against black bear. The .35 Remington has an advantage over the popular .30-30 in that it uses a 200gr bullet (vs 170gr for the .30-30) with a larger frontal area which translates into a more effective transfer of energy when impacting the target. The rifle also features a finely made wood stock and fore end. According to oldguns, a good place to look up Marlin serial numbers, this rifle was made in 1971 and as such is a true Marlin lever rifle as opposed to the later “Remlins” manufactured by Remington under the Marlin name. As such, the barrel has the “J.M.” stamp instead of the later “REM” stamp. The rifle is in excellent overall condition for its age with some wear, mostly pertaining to the wood furniture. The stock has been fitted with a sling swivel point but the fore end has not. The bluing is in 98 percent condition. The bore is in excellent condition with no rust or pitting, though some fouling may be present. The scope is a Buck Ridge Sport Model. There is no box.
