Description: Antique Enfield Martini-Henry Mk IV Pattern 1 – .577/450 – Dated 1887
Offered for sale is an original British Martini-Henry Mark IV Pattern 1 single-shot military rifle manufactured at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield, in 1887.
The right side of the receiver is clearly marked with the Crown over “V.R.,” “ENFIELD,” the 1887 manufacture date, and “IV 1,” identifying it as a Mark IV Pattern 1 rifle. The rifle is chambered in .577/450 Martini-Henry and uses the distinctive falling-block action operated by the long under-lever.
This example retains its full-length military wood stock, military sights, cleaning rod, sling swivels and long-pattern operating lever. Numerous British military inspection, proof and War Department markings are visible on the barrel, receiver and other metal components. The buttstock also carries several period issue, arsenal and inventory markings, including a visible 1908 marking.
The metal shows an aged military finish with thinning, patina, scratches, scattered oxidation and handling wear. The wood shows numerous dents, scratches, worn areas, arsenal marks and service wear consistent with its age and military use. The receiver markings remain clear and legible.
Overall, this rifle is in good antique military condition and displays the honest wear expected on a British service rifle manufactured more than 135 years ago. Please review all photographs carefully for its cosmetic condition.
The rifle has not been test-fired by us. The bore, chamber and mechanical condition have not been verified. It should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith familiar with antique black-powder firearms before firing. Only properly loaded ammunition appropriate for an original .577/450 Martini-Henry should be considered.
