Mauser/Erfurt Sporter 8 x 57
Description: At the end of World War One, two of the four German Arsenals switched to making sporting rifles instead of the 98 actioned military rifles. These 8mm small ring Mauser rifles were produced at the Erfurt and Danzig Arsenals in the latter part of 1918 and into 1920. These arsenals were closed in 1920 and the manufacturing equipment was sent to some east European countries as reparations. This particular rifle, serial number 10397, factory made, and stamped RwE (Reichswerke Erfurt), is a good example of what they produced. It is a reasonably lightweight hunting rifle, which was tastefully engraved, including stippling in an oval border. Raw materials must have been in short supply as evidenced by the Walnut stock being made of two separate pieces of wood laminated together. The people who worked in these rifle factories were hoping for long-term employment, so they produced a well-built, quality rifle that would withstand the test of time. Price reduction, was $600. This rifle, being just over one hundred years old, has aged well. The rust bluing has thinned in a few places, and there is also pinpricked erosion pretty much over the entire blued surface of the rifle, which is smooth to the touch, unlike rust. There is a small chip and a hair-line crack in the stock at the back of the receiver, which extends down to the checkered grip, perhaps a half inch or so. Another superficial scratch is on the right side of the forearm. The stock has been refinished at some point in its life. The thumb safety is very stiff, which may need lubrication. The bore is shiny. The rifle functions as it should and the double set triggers are crisp. The floorplate will release, but is difficult to re-seat. The Butt Plate is steel, and the sling swivels are good. The rear claw scope mount is screw mounted and slides back to receive the rear scope bolt. The front claw mount is dovetailed. All engravings are clear and for being over 100 years old, this rifle is in pretty good condition. This sporting rifle also represents a segment of German gun making history, which is often overlooked, because it only lasted for a couple of years. NOTE: This rifle must ship to a C&R or an FFL.
