Antique TURKISH ANKARA GEWEHR 88 Bolt Action 7.92mm Caliber MAUSER Rifle
Turkish Rework of a Model 1888 COMMISSION RIFLE
Description: Antique TURKISH ANKARA GEWEHR 88 Bolt Action 7.92mm Caliber MAUSER Rifle Turkish Rework of a Model 1888 COMMISSION RIFLE Here we present an antique Turkish Ankara Gewehr 88 Bolt Action Rifle, also referred to as the Model 88 Commission Rifle, made circa the 1890s in Berlin, Germany with a production run between 1888 and 1899 and reworked at Ankara circa 1935. In 1915, The Ottoman Empire joined the Great War with the Central Powers, and virtually from the start, the declining empire was critically short of many necessary weapons and supplies, rifles being one of them. The German Empire, seeing the desperate situation the Ottomans were in, wished to provide them with Rifles of some kind. However, all Gewehr 98’s were prioritized for use by troops of the German empire, meaning there weren’t that many rifles the Germans could ultimately give away. In 1915, Germany sent away tens of thousands of these rifles, one source citing it was most likely somewhere between 25,000 and 50,000 rifles. The Turks would utilize them throughout the war for various duties, before they were once again stored away and left to be unused after the fall of the empire in 1921. In the 1930’s, as War in Europe seemed imminent, the Young Turkish military was shocked to see how short they were of modern and effective rifles. The overall condition is good. Strong, smooth action. Bright bore. This example sports a solid stock with less than expected wear from handling. Legible markings. The numbers match. “1935” dated barrel. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 29 inches. Caliber: 7.92mm Mauser Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
