O.V.S. Mauser Model 1895 7x57mm – DWM, c1899, BOER WAR ERA, MATCHING SN, vintage firearms
Description: General Specs: DWM, c1899, 7x57mm, 8lbs. 15oz. LOP 13 1/4" Serial Number: 8442 Vintage Firearms is pleased to offer a very special Mauser Model 1895, produced by DWM for the Oranje Vrijstaat (Abbreviated to O.V.S.) Kommandos to fight against British forces during the Second Boer War. The early O.V.S. 1895 models have the standard Spanish style straight bolt, which made it difficult for use while mounted. Thus, many Boers swapped the straight rifle bolts for downturned Model 1895 carbine bolts, leading to rifles with mis matched serial numbers. Later, DWM updated their O.V.S. rifle production to include downturned bolts on full length rifles. However, this rifle never made it to Boer forces either due to the ongoing British blockade and was diverted back to DWM or was simply finished production too late to ship. Subsequently, the rifle was sold to Chile and was roll stamped with the Chilean crest. This rifle bares the O.V.S. and DWM stampings on the left side of the receiver and the Chilean crest above the chamber. This rifle features matching serial numbers on the receiver, downturned bolt, stock, and magazine floorplate, which indicates it’s a late production rifle. The receiver and barrel retain 99% finish, and the trigger guard retains 95% finish. What a fascinating rifle with so much history and is truly a once-in-a-lifetime piece and would make a great addition to any Militaria collection, don’t hesitate or it’ll be gone!
