Portuguese Model 1904/39 Vergueiro Rifle by DWM (South African Marked)
Description: Serial #F2865, 7.92mm Mauser, 24" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has mild freckling within the grooves. This is an arsenal reworked rifle, converted in the 1930s from the original 6.5mm chambering to 7.92mm Mauser. The rifle retains 80-85% of the armory re-applied blue finish with gray fading and silvering at the muzzle, as well as along the other high edges and projections. The receiver has clear original DWM markings on the left side, a clear Carlos I royal cypher on the receiver ring, and a small “U(Broad Arrow)" South African property marking below. The matching numbered bolt is likewise in the same condition with some dark freckling on the straight handle. The walnut stock has an armory-added oil finish with numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes scattered throughout, as well as a large armory repair at the toe of the butt. There is a partially legible rack number on the right side of the butt in white paint, and a period leather sling is installed. The rifle almost certainly came into South African possession via either Angola (Portuguese West Africa), or Mozambique (Portuguese East Africa).
