Published Boer War OVS Model 1897 Mauser Rifle w/ Carved Stock
Description: Serial #OVS / 4588, 7mm Mauser, 29" barrel with a very good bore that has mild freckling within the grooves. This is one of the 1,000 rifles ordered by the Orange Free State in May of 1898, and was issued to a Boer fighter who carved his name into the stock. The barrel and receiver have retained about 70-75% of the original blue finish that is mixing smoothly with a dark, plum-brown patina on the balance. The bolt latch has a similar brown patina, but the follower retains most of the original bright fire blue. Unusually for a Boer rifle, the bolt is still the original numbered bolt, which has a bright patina with mild brown freckling on the shroud. The stock has numerous minor handling marks and surface blemishes scattered about the remaining original oil finish, and has the original Boer owner’s name carved in large letters on the right side: “C. NIENABER"; as well as a crudely carved Orange Free State crest on the left side of the butt. The rifle is further accompanied by a correct, but non-matching cleaning rod. This very rifle is pictured on pg. 76 of “Carvings From The Veldt" by David C. George (2004), but no biographical information on C. Nienaber has yet been unearthed. This is a fantastic, issued OVS Mauser, in very good-fine condition, and would make a splendid addition to any collection.
