RARE First MAUSER Gewehr M1871/84 Military Rifle
Description: RARE First MAUSER Gewehr M1871/84 Military Rifle EARLY Pre-WWI UNIT INSCRIBED German MILITARY Rifle Here we present an antique Mauser Gewehr Model 1871/84 Imperial German Rifle, made circa 1888. With the Franco-Prussian War recently decided, each of the combatants went right to work replacing their single-shot breech-loading rifles that had utilized paper cartridges (namely the Dreyse on the German side). These were found to be highly inefficient and unreliable with ammunition still vulnerable to moisture. Along came Peter Paul Mauser, a rising star in the Prussian small arms industry. He and his brother Wilhelm developed what was to become their first successful bolt action military rifle, adopted as the Infanterie-Gewehr Model 1871 in 1872. When the design was updated to include the 8-round tubular magazine (designed by Alfred von Kropatschek) in 1884, it became a repeater known as the Model 1871/84. It was a great success and was adopted en masse by the Prussian military, as well as many other nations. Its groundbreaking technology was soon eclipsed by their opponent, the French, as they developed the first smokeless powder cartridge and rifle in 1886, the 8mm Model 1886 Lebel, causing Germany to quickly develop and adopt a new rifle. However, the Mausers were just getting started, and would soon dominate the world’s firearm industry. This rifle was utilized in the suppression of the Abushiri Revolt in Eastern Africa, one of Imperial Germany’s colonial holdings. It is interesting to note that while this model’s service life was cut relatively short for front line use, it continued to see service in the German Navy and behind the lines all the way through World War I. Some of these rifles were also smuggled into Ireland for use in the Easter Rebellion of 1913. This example was made in the state arsenal at Amberg. The butt plate is unit marked “B.13.R/E.1.229” meaning that this was gun number 229 of the 1st Company of the Ersatz-Batallion of the 13th Infantry Regiment. It is an example of a short rifle variant with a barrel length of 23 inches. It bears a plethora of gothic markings as German arms do. The top of the barrel is marked with the “Crown/Amberg” cipher for the arsenal. The left side of the barrel bears a “Crown/L” which is King Ludwig of Bavaria’s cipher. The overall condition of this rifle is very good. The steel has a dark patina. All markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match on the barrel, receiver, bolt, rear sight, safety, barrel band and magazine cutoff. The stock is in good condition. The bore is like new, with perfect rifling and extremely shiny surface. The action is excellent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is round and 23 inches in length. Caliber: 11mm x 60R (Black powder) Bore is in excellent condition and the firing mechanism is fine. Overall condition as seen in photos.
