Spectacular Custom 98 Mauser Sporter w/ Hensoldt Dialytan 4X Scope on Side Rail Mount w/ Walnut Case & Provenance Letter
** Classy Sporter! **
Description:
This is one classy and elegant custom rifle made from a World War 2 production K98 Mauser barreled action in 1952 in a town called Karlsruhe, Germany. This rifle comes with the original period Hensoldt 4 power scope mounted on a 2-lever quick release side rail mount, and a custom-made Walnut travel case which contains a provenance letter explaining that this rifle was built for a U.S. Army serviceman named Paul H. Pickard in 1952 while he was stationed in Germany. This 8mm Mauser custom sporter is finished in gloss blue and has a 24" inch barrel with iron sights and a German-style front sling swivel base on the barrel, a beautiful checkered and inlaid stock made from an Ash tree root, and the expertly built and installed quick-release optics mount. The bore in this rifle is in excellent condition with strong rifling and no pitting. The custom blue finish is in excellent condition rating 98% plus. The K98 bolt has been customized with a custom spoon-shaped handle with a serrated underside and custom safety tab that will work with a scope. The receiver ring has been stamped with a personalized serial number "PHP39" which is the original owner's initials (Paul H. Pickard) and last two digits of his military ID number. The trigger on this sporter appears to be the original military 2-stage design that has been tuned, lightened, and polished. The stock is spectacular on this rifle. According to the letter, it was carved out of an Ash tree root and the gunsmith that made it went to great lengths to make it beautiful. It has a hand checkered forearm and pistol grip with borders and a beautifully carved cheekpiece. It has an Ebony tipped schnabel forend and a natural horn pistol grip cap. The center of the checkered panels on each side of the forearm have bone inlays, while each side of the upper pistol grip area have silver oak leaf clusters inlaid into the wood. Finally, the buttstock has the original sling swivel assembly intact and the original Geco recoil pad is still in place. The stock truly is a work of art and typical of German/Austrian custom rifles of the period. As mentioned before, the original Hensoldt Wetzlar "Dialytan 4X " is still mounted on the rifle and is in excellent all-original condition. The optics on this scope are bright and clear and the reticle is a Germanic style or "sniper" style reticle with a pointed vertical post flanked by two horizontal posts. This scope is period to the rifle and is not self-centering. All of the adjustments work perfectly and we have no doubt that this will both still hold zero and return to zero when removed and re-installed. Everything on this rifle works 100% as it was designed to. The action is super smooth and precise, and the bolt goes into battery perfectly. This rifle is likely very accurate and with the 8mm Mauser chambering it would be more than adequate for any big game in North America. If you have been looking for a real unique and beautiful custom rifle to add to your collection with some known provenance, this custom 98 Mauser would be an excellent choice. It is not very often that we get such a complete outfit like this one with excellent original optics still intact.
